In the upcoming meeting, the College Station City Council is set to cast their final votes on the city’s proposed budget and tax rate. The council will be discussing a budget of approximately $540 million and maintaining the existing tax rate at $0.513086 per $100 of valuation.
City officials have argued that the proposed budget, which is larger than last year’s, is vital to keep up with the city’s rapid growth. “I’m happy that we have the resources and the citizens have been providing the resources so we can move forward on a number of parks projects, road construction and so forth,” stated Mayor John Nichols.
While the budget has increased, the tax rate itself will remain the same if the proposal is accepted. However, as property values rise, residents may still see a higher tax bill despite the unchanging rate.
Aside from the budget and tax rate, the council will also be voting on the city’s fee schedule. This includes costs for permits, utilities, and city amenities. A proposed 1.9% increase in utility bills is also being considered.
Before the council votes, public hearings for both the budget and tax rate will be held. Residents who wish to voice their opinions on either matter can do so by registering online by 2 p.m. Thursday.
If the council approves these financial items, they will be implemented at the start of the next fiscal year. “October 1, that is when that budget will go into effect, and that is when that tax rate and those utility rate changes will go into effect as well,” announced Assistant City Manager and CFO Jeff Kersten. The council is conscientious of maintaining fiscal responsibility as the city continues to grow, ensuring the new budget assists in achieving that effort.
