Exciting Developments for College Station: City Council Discusses Northgate Sale!
In a lively meeting that lasted nearly two hours on December 12, the College Station city council discussed the potential sale of the Northgate district surface parking lot, and things are looking good! The council expressed no opposition to the idea, paving the way for more public engagement in the development process.
A Mixed-Use Marvel on the Horizon?
After a detailed presentation by the city’s chief development officer, excitement filled the room as he revealed the developer’s concept for a shiny, new multi-story building. This vision includes retail on the ground floor, paired with multiple floors of student housing. Isn’t that just what College Station needs?
The planning and development director also chimed in, sharing that if this proposal gets the green light, it would add to the already bustling array of 20 multistory student housing buildings in various stages of completion. Altogether, these developments could provide an astonishing 11,000 beds for students!
Timeline for Development Approvals
Mark your calendars, folks! The city council is set to consider a sales agreement with the developer in January. The current offer stands at a cool $13 million, and if it gets the thumbs up, the sale could close by May 2026. During this time, residents can look forward to public engagement opportunities, something that potential new neighbors Dee Benning of Duddley’s Draw and Courtney Phillips from the Dixie Chicken appreciated greatly.
Meeting Development Requirements
Should the sale move forward, the city has put forth some solid requirements for the developer. They must build at least 100 parking spaces, include a rideshare drop-off area, create restrooms, and even construct a police substation. Moreover, there will be space designated for trash containers and a lovely area for green space or a charming plaza. It seems like the city is set on ensuring that this development will benefit the entire community.
Blinn College Trustees Report Good News on Enrollment!
In other optimistic news from the Blinn College board of trustees, fall enrollment numbers are nearly matching last year’s post-pandemic high. Vice Chancellor Becky McBride revealed that the RELLIS campus alone saw an impressive jump of 504 students compared to last fall, thanks to the college’s partnerships with Texas A&M system universities.
Currently, the RELLIS location is home to about 4,306 students, edging closer to the Bryan campus, which hosts 5,095 students. This is a significant improvement compared to 6,103 students last fall and the peak of over 13,000 students in 2014.
Looking Ahead for Bryan Campus
Trustee Dennis Crowson, who experienced the Bryan campus’s higher numbers in the past, stressed the importance of increasing enrollment on that campus. With 30 out of 43 public universities in Texas reporting increased freshman enrollment, it’s crucial that Blinn looks for ways to reverse the Bryan campus’s declining numbers. The district-wide total this fall sits at 18,089 students, just shy of last year’s 18,301.

Keeping the Budget in Check
The council has decided to split the costs incurred for the design firm, totaling $852,000. Keeping projects within budget is crucial for the community, and the decision reflects their commitment to fiscal responsibility.
Community Safety Updates
In local crime news, a man from Bryan is back in jail for the 19th time, now facing serious charges including family violence assault and stalking. Law enforcement reports indicate that this individual left alarming voice messages threatening the victim. Meanwhile, a man from Houston has been arrested in College Station on forgery charges.
As College Station continues to evolve and grow, the community is rallying behind these new developments, keeping in mind the importance of engagement, safety, and thoughtful planning. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-changing landscape!
