It was an electric atmosphere this past Thursday, as basketball teams from around the region took to the court, showcasing their skills and competitive spirit in various tournaments. The College Station Cougars, Rudder Rangers, and Mumford Mustangs were just a few of the squads that made headlines with thrilling victories!
College Station Cougars Roar to Victory!
The College Station boys basketball team had a fantastic day at the Royal tournament, securing two solid wins. In their first matchup against Dayton, the Cougars dominated, winning 56-31. The standout performer of the game was James Moore, who led the team by scoring 14 points, grabbing five rebounds, and dishing out two assists. Not to be outdone, David Toussaint contributed significantly with eight points and an impressive eight rebounds along with three blocks.
In their second game, the Cougars faced Cy Lakes’ junior varsity team and came out on top with a score of 74-54. Xavier Vela lit up the scoreboard with 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds. James Moore followed closely behind with 16 points and six assists, while Cameron Newton added an impressive 10 points and eight rebounds. This winning streak is a bright spot for College Station, as they’ve now won four of their last five games! They look forward to facing off against the host team, Royal, at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.
Rudder Rangers Begin Strong in Waco Tournament
Over in Waco, the Rudder boys basketball team kicked off their tournament with a close win against Lake Belton, with a final score of 52-46. Jaquise Martin shone brightly, leading the team with 14 points. Both Kayden Holmes and Isiaih Davis helped bolster the score with 11 points each. Randon Cooks added eight points, while Brandon Cooks chipped in with five points and Rodrigo Salazar Gold finished with three points. The Rangers’ current record stands at 8-4, and they are set to face Sulphur Springs on Friday at 9 a.m., with another game also on the horizon!
Rockdale Tigers with a Defensive Masterclass
The Rockdale boys team showed their defensive prowess against Bruceville-Eddy, resulting in a decisive 50-22 victory. The Tigers were led by Alex Cooper, who put up 11 points, alongside securing three rebounds and three steals. Josiah Smith pulled down 10 rebounds and scored eight points, while De’andre Stephens provided strong support with six points, seven rebounds, and an impressive five steals! This defensive effort was crucial to the Tigers’ success.
Snook Showcases Mixed Results
The Snook boys basketball team had an eventful day, first crushing Dime Box 64-27, led by Max Carter who chipped in 14 points. Jeremiah Powell also had a notable game with 12 points. However, things took a turn in their next game against Eastern Buckets, where they narrowly lost 42-40. Max Carter kept up his scoring streak, adding 17 points in the loss. Snook will be back on the court Friday at 8 a.m. against Round Top Carmine.
Mumford Mustangs Charge Ahead
Finally, the Mumford boys basketball team celebrated a stellar performance against McGregor at the Cameron Yoe Tournament, sealing a 61-45 victory. Taariq Whitfield was the star of the show, lighting up the scoreboard with 26 points. Cory Seymore also delivered a solid game with 12 points, while Braxton Zeig provided crucial support with eight points and five rebounds. The Mustangs’ strong defense has become a hallmark of their game, as they stifled McGregor’s scoring efforts in both the beginning and the end of the match. Mumford will aim to continue their winning momentum on Friday at 10 a.m. against Taylor!
