BRYAN, Texas – Recent developments in legislation have sparked conversations among parents and child advocacy experts about the importance of monitoring children’s interactions on social media. On September 1, Texas implemented the Securing Children Online Through Parent Empowerment Act. This new law expands parents’ ability to monitor their children’s social media accounts while allowing them to limit access to potentially harmful content. This is a welcomed move for many families, including local residents like Jessica Cervantes, a grandmother who feels relieved that her grandchildren are currently too young for phones and social media.
“It’s scary, and I know that my daughter is going to do an amazing job with her kids,” Cervantes stated, expressing her confidence that her family will navigate the digital world safely. “We can just hope everything doesn’t get too crazy in the future.”
Rising Concerns Over Online Dangers
As the conversation about protecting children continues, experts in child advocacy like Alison Pourteau, the Clinical Services Director at Scotty’s House, highlight the need for ongoing discussions between parents and children. Pourteau notes that the digital age has made it easier for predatory behavior to seep into everyday online interactions.
“Obviously, a lot of what we see here is kind of the online predatory behavior that, again, every parent needs to be able to talk with their teen about,” Pourteau elaborated. “But it is also just the more mundane day-to-day challenges. Kids already struggle with feeling accepted and good about who they are, and we are seeing a significant impact of social media on those things.”
The Role of Parents in Setting Boundaries
Experts encourage parents to establish rules and boundaries from the very beginning, ideally when their kids first get a phone or start using mobile devices. Being involved in conversations about which apps are suitable and appropriate for their children’s ages can significantly affect how kids engage with social media.
Pourteau believes that the emergence of such laws and parental oversight is crucial, especially given the increasing number of cases where kids struggle with the expectations set by social media, which can lead to bullying and mental health challenges. “This is probably the first generation that we’re seeing social media to such a heavy extent from a very early age,” she added, underscoring the correlation between heavy social media use and rising anxiety and depression rates among youth.

In light of these emerging trends, Scotty’s House is spearheading a campaign encouraging kids to replace social media time with healthier activities or even consider deleting one social media app altogether. The goal is to help kids recognize the negative impact that excessive screen time can have on their mental well-being.
“It’s kind of double danger for these teenagers,” Pourteau explained. “They are already very susceptible to feeling bad about themselves and wanting acceptance. Then, there are tons of perpetrators lurking online.”
