Exciting Events at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Local Government Updates

College Station is buzzing with excitement as the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum prepares for a lineup of engaging events. During a recent chat with local officials, Amy Raines, a representative from the library, unveiled some noteworthy happenings set to take place soon.

Mark Your Calendars for the ADA Anniversary!

First up on March 18, the library will host a special film and panel discussion to celebrate the 35th anniversary of President George H.W. Bush signing the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). This significant piece of legislation has shaped the lives of millions, and everyone is encouraged to join in the festivities. Although there’s no admission fee, an RSVP is a must, so be sure to visit the library’s website to secure your spot.

Easter Festivities Are Coming!

If you’re looking to get into the Easter spirit, hop on over to the library on April 12 for the annual Easter celebration. With fun activities planned for families and children, it’s a fantastic opportunity to make sweet memories. Don’t miss out on this joyous occasion!

Summer Film Series on the Horizon

As the days get warmer, the library will also be rolling out its annual summer film series. While the details are still under wraps, you can bet it will be a fantastic way to enjoy some classic films and gather with friends and family.

Local Government Updates: Contracts and Concerns

Bentley Nettles and Fred Brown raised eyebrows over two hefty contracts totaling an impressive $54.5 million. These contracts aim to hire an architect and construction manager for a new office complex right across Texas Avenue from the courthouse.

Need for Information Sparks Debate

Commissioner Nettles expressed his concern, suggesting a delay on voting for these contracts. He highlighted the lack of crucial information regarding the need for additional office space and what’s driving this significant expenditure. He voiced his frustration about being in the dark about projects that were set in motion before he took office last November.

Commissioner Brown backed Nettles’ request for transparency, emphasizing how important it is for new members to comprehend the financial implications of such projects. This proposed office complex plans to house facilities for public defenders, adult probation offices, a convenient skywalk to the courthouse, and even a parking garage. It’s clear that the project intends to enhance civic services, but the path forward needs clarity.

American Red Cross Celebrated

During the same meeting, a proclamation was issued in recognition of the 140th anniversary of the American Red Cross. Their consistent support during crises over the years was acknowledged, along with a push for upcoming blood donation drives in the area. This is a wonderful reminder of the vital services they provide.

Crime Updates in the Community

Jontae Webber guilty of armed robbery. This incident unfolded in February 2023 and has led to a 35-year prison sentence for Webber. In an intriguing twist, police caught him after tracking the stolen merchandise thanks to a hidden tracking device. He was apprehended with the stolen items and a firearm in his possession.

Webber’s past played a significant role, with prosecutors detailing his prior robbery convictions in California; he had only been paroled less than a year before the robbery in Brazos County. Even more concerning, just two days after his arrest, Webber attempted a daring escape from a hospital.

Upcoming Fun for Families

Looking forward, families can circle June 10, 2025, on their calendars for the second annual “Family Fish” event hosted by the College Station Police Department at the presidential library pond. From 7-11 a.m., this free event will welcome fishing enthusiasts of all ages. It’s a joy for kids, and you won’t need a fishing license to participate! Limited children’s fishing poles will be provided, but families are encouraged to bring their own.

Excitingly, the library will be stocking the pond with catfish, and any catfish caught can be taken home! Remember to practice catch-and-release for the other fish species. Adding to the fun, a taco truck and emergency vehicle displays will be on site to entertain the whole family.

As the library opens its doors from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the event day, make sure to come out and enjoy everything the day has to offer!
