City of Bryan gave the green light to a $100,000 economic development grant on Tuesday, transforming a shopping plaza on East 29th Street into a women-owned wellness hub. As part of a Chapter 380 agreement with the city, the grant will match up to $100,000 for facade improvements and aspects of beautification in the area.
Soon to become a wellness district, the area will house local wellness and beauty establishments such as Piranha Fitness Studio, SoCo Head Spa and Blow Dry Bar, and Dose Injection Lounge by Luna Skin. The hub is designed to be a holistic destination for wellness and beauty services where services including hair styling, fitness classes, and spa experiences will are available. Many of the businesses intended for the new district already cater to several residents of Bryan-College Station including university staff, faculty, and students.
Bryan Mayor Bobby Gutierrez emphasized the project’s importance in a council meeting held on Tuesday. “We are thrilled to see the revitalization of the East 29th Street corridor by local, women-owned businesses,” he said. He also added that this is precisely the kind of initiative that Chapter 380 was designed to support—projects that vitalize key areas and stimulate economic development.
Councilwoman Marca Ewers-Shurtleff supported the initiative, stating its potential to encourage economic redevelopment and embellishment in the area. In her statement, she said that the city of Bryan is overjoyed to be part of this economic development agreement with women-owned ventures. “I’m a happy patron of both Piranha Fitness and SoCo Blow Dry Bar,” she proudly exclaimed, expressing her excitement on seeing women-owned enterprises flourish in Bryan.
Lindsay Greening, the founder of Piranha Fitness Studio, plans to relocate due to construction at the current location and sees this as an opportunity to rejuvenate a historic part of Bryan. Stephanie Anderson, the founder of SoCo Head Spa & Blow Dry Bar, and a primary partner in the venture, mirrored her enthusiasm, thanking the city of Bryan for its phenomenal support. Robin Gage, owner of Luna Skin and Aesthetics, expressed her eagerness about expanding her services with the new Dose Injection Lounge in the plaza.
A grand opening event for the wellness hub is set to take place in the early fall. Although the timeline for the opening of each business in the new plaza is still underway, updates will be shared through social media.
