Bryan, Texas Commemorates National Wreaths Across America Day with Community Spirit and Honor

Bryan, Texas Honors National Wreaths Across America Day

This past Saturday, the little town of Bryan, Texas, came together to show gratitude and respect for our nation’s heroes during National Wreaths Across America Day. It was a day filled with emotion, patriotism, and community spirit, as over 4,000 locations across the nation remembered the sacrifices made by countless brave men and women in uniform. Despite the rain pouring down that morning, nothing could dampen the hearts of those participating in the ceremony at the College Station City Cemetery.

A Rainy but Meaningful Ceremony

The local chapter of Wreaths Across America took charge, ensuring that their tribute to the fallen was carried out beautifully. With wet roads and umbrellas in hand, the participants gathered at the cemetery. The situation called for the Honor Guard from American Legion Post 159 in Bryan, who readily stepped up to lay the wreaths on the headstones of beloved veterans. As they carefully placed the evergreen wreaths, they also spoke the names of the heroes who had served our country, paying heartfelt tribute in a way that resonates deeply with families and communities alike.

The Sentiments of a Gold Star Mother

Among the attendees was Mary Kay Edwards, a Gold Star Mother, who shared her poignant experience of love and loss. Her son was killed while serving in Iraq, and this day holds a special significance for her. “It is so important to me, because when you put a wreath down at the gravesite, you need to say the person’s name, so, in my mind, they hear you,” she reflected during the ceremony. Edwards emphasized that this moment helps keep the memories of the fallen alive, assuring that “so they’re not forgotten, that’s the main thing.” Her commitment to honoring her son was palpable, and it’s a sentiment that many in attendance could relate to.

Simultaneous Remembrance Across the Country

At 11 a.m. Central Time, ceremonies like this one were happening all over the country. Communities united for a synchronized moment of silence, carrying the torch of remembrance together. Mary Kay Edwards highlighted the connection she feels during this time, sharing, “My son has a tree at Fort Stewart. They are doing exactly the same thing, at exactly the same day. So my son is being talked about there and out at Somerville where he is.” It’s fascinating how threads of remembrance weave across the nation, creating a tapestry of love and honor for those who have paid the ultimate price for freedom.

Wreath-Laying Beyond College Station

The reach of Wreaths Across America extended well beyond College Station. Local volunteers made wreath placements at three other cemetery sites in the Bryan/College Station area, as well as at over 60 additional cemeteries scattered throughout the Brazos Valley. The meticulous coordination of these efforts exemplifies the commitment of the community to remember, respect, and recognize the sacrifices made by our veterans.

Why Wreaths Across America Matters

So why does this day matter? For many, it is an opportunity to reflect, to express gratitude, and to participate in a shared national moment of recognition. It’s the profound connection to the past that makes the experience so valuable.

As participants in Bryan and beyond gathered to honor heroes, many walked away from the event with a renewed sense of purpose—to ensure that the memory of our fallen military personnel lives on and that their contributions are never forgotten. The spirit of community, resilience, and remembrance truly shone through, proving that together, we can make a difference in keeping the legacies of our heroes alive.
