Hey there, Bryan residents! It’s been another eventful week in our lovely city, packed with fantastic news from the Bryan ISD and some not-so-great happenings around town. Let’s jump right into it!
First things first, let’s give a huge shout-out to Bryan ISD, which has once again achieved the highest financial rating from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) for the 22nd consecutive year! Can you believe it? This incredible feat comes from the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST) report, which was reviewed at the school board meeting on December 2, 2024.
During the meeting, Board Member Leo Gonzalez expressed his surprise at the lack of public attendance. He noted, “It’s amazing how much I get asked about this…and they ask so many questions and yet when we have somebody here that could answer them we don’t have anyone show up to ask the questions. It’s a little frustrating.” It seems people are curious about how the district manages its funds but aren’t as keen to engage directly!
Another hot topic was how much of the budget is allocated for administration. Board president David Stasny inquired about this during the meeting, leading Assistant Superintendent Kevin Beesaw to confirm that the district spends only 7.5% on administrative costs—well below the state’s maximum! Talk about efficiency!
On a much different note, let’s talk nightlife. As Hurricane Harry’s closed its doors for the final time, things got a bit chaotic. According to a College Station police report, a reckless driver got himself into trouble trying to navigate through the crowded scene. The police managed to catch Nicholas Eggebrecht, a 21-year-old from College Station, for his reckless driving antics. This marks his third trip behind bars in the last 12 months! After he posted $2,000 bail, we hope he gets the help he needs.
In other news, there was an unfortunate incident at the Brazos County Jail on Thanksgiving. Darwin Brown, a 31-year-old inmate, reportedly assaulted a detention officer after spending some time in the recreation yard. The reports indicate he spat and then punched the officer in the cheek. It’s disheartening to see tensions flare, especially around the holidays.
Speaking of troubling trends, here’s one that’s particularly alarming: a local man was arrested for making a false emergency report. The 47-year-old claimed he had a gun and threatened to harm himself and his father. Thankfully, police responded quickly, and he was taken into custody. He was released later that day after posting bond. Let’s hope he gets the support he needs!
Now for some exciting news for Texas A&M sports fans: the days of camping out for football tickets are fading away! President Mark Welsh announced that starting next season, the ticket process will shift to a digital platform. This decision comes after concerns were raised during the ticket pull for the Texas game. Welsh listened to student feedback, and it turns out 63% of students with sports passes were in favor of the change. No more dangerous night-outs for tickets—what a relief!
And finally, a bit of a mystery in the McCulloch historic district! The College Station Police Department is seeking help in locating some missing street sign toppers that vanished recently. Residents had worked hard to fundraise for these signs, and it’s disheartening to see them go. If you have any information, the police would love to hear from you.
So there you have it, folks! Between celebrating educational success and dealing with some local dramas, Bryan keeps us on our toes. Let’s continue to support each other and our community as we move forward!
