Exciting Happenings in Bryan-College Station: Vendor Fair, Tax Talks, and Pet Scam Alerts
Hey there, Bryan! There’s lots of buzz happening in the heart of our city lately, and we are here to break it all down for you. From a local initiative supporting small businesses to important discussions about property taxes, and even some pet-related scams you need to be aware of, there’s plenty to catch up on!
Supporting Local Businesses: Vendor Fair on the Horizon
To give our local businesses a much-needed boost, Brazos County commissioner Fred Brown has recently announced an exciting project aimed at promoting locally owned businesses. As part of this initiative, a vendor fair will be held alongside a Chamber of Commerce job fair on May 1 at the Brazos Center. This is fantastic news for job seekers and local entrepreneurs alike! You can look forward to representatives from Texas A&M University, the city of Bryan, and College Station ISD attending. This event will not only showcase local vendors but also help in connecting them with job seekers, making it a win-win for everyone involved!
Property Tax Negotiations: Big News for Bryan ISD
In other news, there are important negotiations ongoing regarding property tax breaks for a massive $13 billion semiconductor manufacturing and research complex on the RELLIS campus. The Bryan ISD school board and the governor’s office have been in discussions since September 2024. During a recent meeting, Bryan mayor Bobby Gutierrez was optimistic about the negotiations, expressing hope that a solid agreement will be reached soon. He assured that the state would not pursue uncollected taxes from the school district—great news for residents!
It’s interesting to note that while the Bryan city council and Brazos County commission approved certain incentives last year, they weren’t required to secure the governor’s approval for their actions. However, public school districts like Bryan ISD are bound to formalize agreements with the governor under the Jobs, Energy, Technology, and Innovation Act (JETI), enacted during the last legislative session.
Community Enhancements: New Water Tower Logos
The Bryan city council is also working diligently to make our community even more vibrant! A recent workshop meeting on April 8 had them deciding on logos for the under-construction water tower off West Villa Maria along Chick Lane. Keep your eyes peeled as these striking logos will soon greet motorists. As they turn onto Leonard Road from John Sharp Parkway, they’ll see “Birthplace of Aggieland” and “Bryan Texas” coming off Harvey Mitchell Parkway. The installation is set for August, and it promises to be a fantastic addition to our landscape!
Pet Scam Alert: Stay Vigilant
Attention pet owners! Please be aware that there’s a scam making its rounds in our community. Scammers are impersonating Aggieland Humane Society staff, demanding hefty amounts of money for supposed surgery costs to retrieve lost pets. If you encounter such calls, hang up immediately and reach out to Aggieland Humane Society directly to check on the status of your furry friends. It’s always better to double check, and don’t hesitate to report these scam calls to law enforcement.
Veteran Services: Resource Fair Coming Up
For our esteemed veterans, the Brazos County Veteran Services Office is stepping up by enhancing services and partnering with the Don & Ellie Knauss Veteran Resource and Support Center. On February 17, there will be a Veterans Resource Fair and Claims Clinic which promises to be a valuable event for our veterans. This fair will boast nearly 70 vendors and also includes veteran service officers ready to help with filing claims. It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with local businesses and organizations that support our heroes!
Fiber Arts Festival: A Celebration of Local Talent
Finally, mark your calendars for the inaugural Brazos Valley Fiber Festival happening on March 7 and 8, 2025, at The Kimbell in downtown Bryan. It’s a fantastic celebration of local fiber art and crafts, perfect for art lovers and anyone interested in the vibrant culture of our community. It promises to be a delightful event that showcases the creativity and talent of our wonderful artists!
