Hey there, Bryan residents! There’s a lot going on in our vibrant city, and it’s time to break down some of the latest happenings that you’ll definitely want to hear about! Whether it’s about our environment or some construction updates, we’ve got you covered!
Let’s kick things off with some good news for our environment! Kyle McCain, the Solid Waste Supervisor, along with Mark Jurica, the Wastewater Treatment & Compliance Manager, joined Chelsea Reber on a recent segment to discuss our fantastic used tire and oil recycling center, aptly named “Preventing the Clog.”
This center is a real gem in our efforts to keep our city clean and safe. It allows residents to drop off used tires and oil, preventing them from clogging our drainage systems. Just think of it as a local superhero for our environment! Not only does it keep the streets clean, but it also protects our waterways. It’s a win-win for every one of us.
Switching gears, let’s talk real estate! The College Station city council recently met and shared some interesting news regarding the Northgate district surface parking lot. Can you believe they’re considering selling it for a whopping $13 million? After nearly two hours of discussions and public comments, there was no opposition from the council! Sounds like a hot topic, doesn’t it?
The city’s chief development officer revealed that the proposed concept for this development includes a multistory mixed-use building. Imagine a bustling retail space on the ground floor, with student housing stacked above. If everything goes as planned, it would join the 20 existing multistory student housing buildings, potentially offering 11,000 new beds for our growing population.
The timeline for this project is pretty exciting too. The city’s planning department is hoping the College Station council will consider the sales agreement in January. If they give the green light, the closing could happen by May 2026. Public engagement will also be a big part of the plan, ensuring residents have a voice in this development.
As the project spiraled in cost from the original $17 million to a staggering $27 million, it was clear something had to change. Eventually, the project was halted in what many are seeing as a wise decision. Instead, the city will focus on better designs and being mindful of budgets in future projects.
Over at Blinn College, the news isn’t too shabby either! Fall enrollment numbers are holding steady and almost matching last year’s post-pandemic highs. Vice Chancellor Becky McBride noted an increase of 504 students on the RELLIS campus, thanks to strong partnerships with Texas A&M’s branch locations.
The overall headcount for Blinn is currently at 18,089, just shy of last year’s numbers. The good news is that the dual credit students are also on the rise! With a boost from 2,145 to 2,552, it seems local high schoolers are taking the initiative to earn credits early.
With all these developments, it’s safe to say that Bryan and the surrounding areas are on the move! From recycling efforts that clean up our parks to ongoing discussions about new housing developments, it’s an exciting time to be in our community. If you want to stay in the loop, keep your eyes peeled for more updates that affect you!
That’s all for now. Stay engaged, stay informed, and let’s keep our city shining bright!
