Bryan City Council Meeting Highlights Big Plans for the Community
Here in Bryan, the City Council held an exciting meeting in March that was packed full of updates on capital improvement projects and fun community events! The City Manager, Kean Register, shared a lot of information about what’s happening in our city and what we can look forward to as summer approaches.
Exciting Capital Improvement Projects on the Horizon
One of the most talked-about projects is the Midtown Park Boardwalk project. The contractor is gearing up to drain the lake in preparation for construction, with the goal of having it completed by October. So, nature lovers, get ready for some beautiful new pathways to enjoy!
In addition, the Midtown Park Water Wells project is set to kick off later this month. Well locations have been staked, and construction will be ongoing until fall. This will certainly aid in maintaining the park’s beautiful greenery!
Good news for commuters, too! South College Avenue has opened back up from Villa Maria to Waverly, which will make travel a bit smoother. Meanwhile, those who regularly use Rountree Road will appreciate it serving as a bypass around the closed Williamson intersection, where a new roundabout is on track to wrap up by May.
The Bristol Street and Esther Blvd Drainage project is in full swing, with large concrete box culverts being installed, and it’s expected to finish up by the end of 2025. For those with a keen eye, you might notice construction wrapping up soon on the Hillside Drive/Old Oaks Drive Drainage Improvements. We’re almost at the punch list phase!
As for the Old Hearne Road project, Phase 1 is nearly complete, and it seems the contractor is hustling to tidy up a few last details. The Old Hearne Road Extension Project will see new infrastructure extending about 1,800 linear feet and is anticipated to finish by late 2025. Thankfully, traffic signal replacements at Villa Maria at Briarcrest and Briarcrest at Broadmoor are projected to be finished by the end of this month, helping to improve traffic flow in our busy areas.
Parks and Community Events – Fun Just Around the Corner!
Switching gears to feather the fun and excitement of our parks and pools! A turf improvement project at the BRAC soccer fields has kicked off and is set to enhance the playing surface throughout the summer. However, the Bryan Aquatic Center Bulkhead project faced some delays, and they’ll be closing the pool until March 31, with a big reopening on April 1. That’ll be one to mark on your calendar!
Add some sparkle to your outdoor adventures; a light pole at Sue Haswell Park that fell during a windstorm has been removed, and a replacement is on the way. Plus, to enhance safety along the steep slopes of Turkey Creek Trail, a new split rail fence has been installed. All great steps to ensure our parks remain safe and enjoyable for everyone!
This month, the Parks and Recreation Department is rolling out “Introduction to Pickleball” classes every Thursday until April 8, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at the Neal Recreation Center. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a complete novice, it’s a fantastic chance to learn a new sport!
The city is also seeking enthusiastic individuals to fill seasonal positions, like lifeguards and camp counselors. All applicants must be at least 16 years old, so if you’re looking for a summer job, now is the time to apply!
Exciting Upcoming Events You Won’t Want to Miss!
Mark your calendars, everyone! Registration is now open for exciting programs such as Start Smart Soccer, the 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, a Swim Stroke Clinic, and Spring Swim Lessons. And for our beloved seniors aged 55 and older, there’s a Senior Social on April 8 to discuss gardening for a small fee of $5.
Kids will love the upcoming Blue Bunny Egg Hunt at Sue Haswell Memorial Park on April 12, which will include thrilling free activities and a chance to meet the Easter Bunny! And if that’s not enough, head over to Travis Fields for the Helicopter Egg Drop event on April 13, where fun awaits children all the way up to 5th grade.
Plus, don’t forget about the Michael Hearne’s Big Barn Dance from March 27 to March 29 happening at Travis Bryan Midtown Park, and enjoy the free Downtown Bryan Street & Art Fair on April 5 during Texas A&M’s Family Weekend, featuring live music and fun-family friendly activities.
Before we go, a quick note: the Bryan Animal Center is offering pet adoptions for just $7, including spay/neuter, microchips, vaccinations, and a sample food bag until March 31. So if you’ve been considering adding a furry family member, now is a great time!
As always, we encourage everyone to stay involved within the community and take advantage of these wonderful upcoming activities and improvements. Bryan is buzzing with opportunities, don’t miss out!
