Bryan has been buzzing with excitement as locally beloved Buddy’s Appliance recently celebrated 50 glorious years in business! This family-owned staple, which opened its doors in 1960, was honored with the Texas Treasure Business Award on February 18, 2025, for their enduring contribution to the community. In a heartwarming ceremony, owner Buddy Haney received the prestigious award from Vicki Smith-Dicky, the vice chair of the Brazos County Historical Commission. This recognition is no small feat, as the award is only given to businesses that have reached the 50-year mark, showcasing their commitment and service to the community.
Smith-Dicky couldn’t help but rave about the unparalleled service Buddy’s Appliance has provided over the decades. It’s this deep-rooted commitment to customer relationships that has made the business a beloved fixture in Bryan!
Though the health district wasn’t present, Councilman Paul Torres shared that he’d been asked to present their request by an unidentified representative. Some council members expressed their eagerness to hear directly from the health district to gather more insights on the proposed ordinance.
Council members Ray Arrington and James Edge voiced their concerns about public health and safety responsibilities for both the city and county. Edge shared that this was not the first time the BCHD board had discussed the ordinance. Although aimed at improving safety regulations, some members of the council came out swinging against the proposal.
Council member Marca Ewers-Shurtleff took a strong stance against what she termed a government overreach. She raised eyebrows especially at a particular clause within the ordinance that would allow swift suspension of permits without prior notice. This raised alarms about transparency and fairness in enforcement.
Meanwhile, Councilman Jared Salvato questioned the necessity of such regulations, pointing out that private pools were not included in the proposal. He emphasized that the presence of social media would keep commercial pool operators accountable in today’s world. The concern amongst council members seemed to grow as they debated the balance between safety and excessive regulation.
The discussion garnered a great deal of public interest, and while Torres mentioned the ordinance was aimed at ensuring compliance among pool operators with safety standards, the council majority, including Mayor Bobby Gutierrez, ultimately sent the proposal packing, citing insufficient justification for the regulations.
On a gripping side note, as all this was happening, another dramatic scenario unfolded in Bryan. Salvador Saucedo Jr., a man that had unfortunately made it onto the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Most Wanted list for sex offenders, made headlines by escaping custody just weeks earlier. The news took a turn as it was reported that he had introduced himself into a health crisis, suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the same day as Buddy’s Appliance’s award. This eerie twist had folks in the community exchanging worried glances.
Saucedo’s story serves as a stark reminder of the complexities of ensuring safety and security, not just in public spaces like swimming pools, but in the wider community as a whole.
