Brenham Cubs Kick Off District Play with a Solid 8-4 Win Against College Station Cougars

In the vibrant city of Brenham, excitement was in the air as the Brenham Cubs kicked off their District 17-5A play with an impressive 8-4 victory over the College Station Cougars last Tuesday night at Cougar Field. This win marks a memorable moment for the Cubs, as it’s their first triumph over the Cougars on their home field since the 2022 season!

Fast Start for the Cubs

The game began with a bang for the Cubs as they exploded for four big runs in the top of the first inning! It was a collective effort that got the crowd buzzing. Dalton Hart started things off by getting on base with a walk, and soon after, Brody Tucker reached base due to a Cougars error.

Then things took a thrilling turn when Drake Bentke came through with a double, allowing Hart to score the Cubs’ first run. The excitement continued as Cannon Credeur reached on another error, letting both Brady Rau (courtesy running for Tucker) and Bentke cross home plate. The inning concluded with Luke Hardy hitting an RBI single, bringing Credeur home and pushing Brenham to a promising 4-0 lead.

College Station Fights Back

Although the Cubs had a great start, the Cougars responded with a run in the bottom of the first, trimming Brenham’s lead to 4-1. However, the Cubs didn’t let this shake their confidence. In the second inning, Hart hit a single to get things rolling again. Following that, Tucker executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Hart to second base. Thanks to another error from the Cougars, Landry Mendoza reached base, allowing Hart to score, thus extending Brenham’s lead to 5-1.

Building on the Lead

The action didn’t slow down there! In the top of the third, Hardy hit another single, showcasing his solid performance at the plate. He later scored thanks to an RBI single from Tucker, bringing the score to 6-1. The Cougars tried to mount a comeback, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third, making the game a nail-biter at 6-4.

Insurance Runs Seal the Deal

Just when it looked like the Cougars were crawling back into the game, the Cubs added some much-needed insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Mendoza hit a single, and Credeur walked to set the stage. Then, in a spectacular display of batting, Evan Curtis connected on a two-run double, pushing the score to a comfortable 8-4 for Brenham.

Brayden Steele Stands Strong

On the pitching side, Brody Hemann started the game and delivered a solid performance before handing the ball over to Brayden Steele, who pitched 4 1/3 innings of relief. Steele was remarkable, not allowing any runs and recording the final strikeout to secure the victory!

What’s Next for the Cubs?

With this victory, the Brenham Cubs now sport an overall record of 10 wins, 6 losses, and 1 tie. The game not only marked a strong start in district play but also showcased the Cubs’ depth, as they batted around in that first inning. Fans will surely be eager to see how they continue their momentum.

The Cubs are set to continue their campaign this Thursday night at 7 PM at Fireman’s Park in Brenham. There’s still a long season ahead, and they aim to build on this impressive win.

As of now, Brenham sits at the top of the District 17-5A standings alongside A&M Consolidated and Lake Creek, all starting off with a win. College Station, on the other hand, will be looking to bounce back in their next matchup. Stay tuned!
