In a competitive district basketball matchup, the Brenham Cubettes were narrowly defeated by the College Station Lady Cougars, extending their winless streak to seven games. Despite their efforts, the Cubettes fell short with a final score of 54-48. The game saw a halftime deficit of 10 points for Brenham, but they rallied in the second half, showcasing resilience and determination. Junior Antyiahna Lang stood out with a breakout performance, scoring 15 points. As the season progresses, the focus remains on improvement and sustaining momentum for success.
In an intense district basketball showdown, the Brenham Cubettes faced off against the College Station Lady Cougars and came up just short once again, extending their winless streak in district play to seven games. The Cubettes put up a valiant effort but ultimately fell with a final score of 54-48.
As the teams headed into halftime, Brenham found themselves trailing by 10 points, with the scoreboard reading 31-21. This deficit certainly set the stage for a challenging second half, but the Cubettes were determined to fight back and turn the tide in their favor.
With this latest loss, Brenham’s overall record now stands at 11 wins and 16 losses, while their district record is an unfortunate 0-7. On the other side of the court, College Station improved their standings to 22-8 overall and 5-2 in district play.
The first quarter saw the Lady Cougars take an early lead, closing out the quarter at 17-9. Brenham struggled to find their rhythm during some stretches, including a scoring drought that lasted 2:46. Fortunately, sophomore standout Janiyah Mathis broke the silence for the Cubettes with a much-needed score, bringing the team back into contention.
The second quarter delivered a jolt to the Cubettes’ hopes as College Station extended their lead to 20-9 with a well-placed 3-pointer. But Brenham wasn’t about to give up that easily.
In the third quarter, the Cubettes demonstrated their grit and resilience. They cut the deficit to 39-30, thanks in part to crucial free throws from Yazmine Gaines. This comeback effort was a key moment, allowing self-belief to start creeping back into the players’ minds. Going into the final quarter, Brenham trailed 42-36, still very much in the game.
The tension soared as the Cubettes managed to pull within just four points on two occasions in the fourth quarter, the first being 44-40 thanks to impressive baskets from junior Antyiahna Lang and senior J’Tayla Moore. Lang had a breakout performance, scoring an impressive 15 points, marking her best outing of the district season with seven field goals to her name.
Despite their uplifting performances, Brenham faced challenges down the stretch, struggling with turnovers and missed opportunities that left fans on the edge of their seats. Mathis rounded out her night with an eight-point performance, signifying her bounce back from shooting woes in previous games.
As Coach Brad Evans observed the game, the focus now shifts to finishing the season on a positive note. The team knows that momentum is crucial as they look to build towards next season, with an eye on improvement for the future.
The Brenham Cubettes may have fallen short against College Station, but the resilience and spirit they showed on the court is promising. With continued determination and focus, they still have a chance to turn things around as they look ahead to the remainder of the season.
