In a thrilling matchup last night, the Brenham Cubettes couldn’t quite keep up with the fierce College Station Lady Cougars, dropping their District 17-5A opener with a score of 56-43. The game kicked off at a lively pace, with both teams battling hard for those crucial early baskets.
At the end of the first quarter, excitement was thick in the air as College Station took a narrow lead of 12-10. It was clear the Lady Cougars came ready to play, showing off their skills and teamwork. The tension ramped up even more in the second quarter; despite a commendable effort from the Cubettes, the Lady Cougars outscored them 15-12, which left Brenham trailing by a score of 27-22 at halftime.
Coming out of the locker room, fans were hopeful the Cubettes would find their rhythm. Unfortunately, the Lady Cougars continued to dominate, winning the third quarter 19-15 and extending their lead to 46-37. As the fourth quarter unfolded, Brenham struggled to recover, and College Station poured it on, ultimately outscoring the Cubettes 10-6 in the final stretch to seal their victory.
Despite the loss, there were some bright spots for Brenham. Janiyah Mathis led the team with an impressive 14 points, showcasing her skills on the court. Following closely was Antyiahna Lang, who contributed a solid 11 points, and Jalayla Hancock, who rounded out the scoring with 9 points. Their effort was commendable, and it’s evident that the team has potential to make a comeback in future games.
As the Cubettes take a break this Friday, basketball fans won’t have to wait long for the team’s next chance to shine. They will be back on the court next Tuesday night when they host Montgomery at the Brenham High School.
