Brazos County Tax Assessor-Collector Announces Resignation Effective August 1

Brazos County Tax Assessor-Collector Announces Resignation Effective August 1

Brazos County, TX – The long-standing Brazos County tax assessor-collector, Kristy Roe, has announced her intent to step down from her role effective August 1. In a turn of events, Roe made the announcement to the county commissioners on Tuesday, marking the end of an era of steadfast service dating back to 2001.

Serving in the Public Interest

Having served the residents of Brazos County for 23 years, Roe originally announced in December 2023 that she would not be seeking re-election. Now, she has voluntarily elected to curtail her tenure and allow the transition to new administration during a historically quieter time for the office. Roe’s career as a tax assessor-collector extends even beyond her time in Brazos County – she previously held the same position in Coke County before taking up service with Brazos.

A Smooth Handover

A critical reason behind Roe’s decision is to ensure a smooth transition. In her statement, Roe opined, “A major change in administration is best handled during a historically quieter, less busy time if possible.” She sees her early resignation as an opportunity to allow her successor to transition into the role more efficiently and to minimize any disruption to the public.

Preparing for Change

Given that there are several audits required for an elected Tax Assessor-Collector to leave the office, the timing of Roe’s resignation comes in handy. Under her administration, the office has received clean audits from the State Comptroller as well as the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Currently, a full audit by the Brazos County Auditor is being completed.

Trust, Responsibility, and Community Service

During her tenure, Roe served Brazos County and its residents earnestly, handling responsibilities at the State, County, City, School District, and Emergency Service District levels. Acknowledging her strong connection with Brazos County, she said, “My family and I were welcomed to Brazos County in July of 2001, and I was honored to be chosen as Tax Assessor/Collector upon the retirement of Mr. Winn in July of 2007.

She further expressed her gratitude to the community for having chosen her for four terms and their continuous trust in her over the years.

Roe says she is looking forward to spending more time with her husband and extended family. Her plans for retirement include traveling and spending quality time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren out West.

With Roe’s announcement, the county commissioners hold the power to decide who will fill the remainder of her term; an important decision that will impact the county’s fiscal administration.
