Sponsor Our ArticlesThis week in Brazos County, College Station’s Fire Chief reported progress on a new fire station set to open in 2026. Meanwhile, Senator Schwertner discussed local legislative matters, including the selection of a new chancellor for the Texas A&M University System. In Bryan, disturbing incidents including an assault and a firearm arrest raised concerns about public safety. Community members are urged to stay informed and engaged with these developments.
Things are buzzing in College Station and Bryan, as we bring you some of the latest updates on public safety, legislative initiatives, and community incidents. Buckle up for an overview of what’s been happening!
In a recent report to the city council, Fire Chief Richard Mann shared some exciting updates about the College Station Fire Department. One major highlight is the progress on the new fire station, the seventh in the city, set to break ground in April 2025. This new station is expected to be fully operational by fall 2026.
But that’s not all! Chief Mann also revealed that the fire engine ordered back in October 2023 is estimated to arrive by July 2026. For the stats lovers out there, it’s notable that, in last year alone, about two-thirds of the department’s calls were for medical emergencies. The department transported almost 90% of the 5,100 patients it assisted to advanced life support.
In 2024, it seems our firefighters added some extra polish to their operations, as they made 230 fewer ambulance trips compared to the previous year. It’s also worth mentioning that most of the calls—around 92%—were within College Station, while the rest mostly served residents outside city limits in Brazos County.
With more than 1,600 sick calls, 1,200 automatic alarms, and a handful of serious incidents like major accidents and calls for unconscious individuals, the College Station Fire Department continues making a significant impact in our community!
Shifting gears to a more legislative note, Senator Charles Schwertner took some time to chat about the happenings in the state legislature during an interview. A big talking point was the recent selection of Glenn Hegar as the sole finalist for the next chancellor of the Texas A&M University System.
Alongside discussing the progress of the legislative session, Senator Schwertner had an intriguing take on the “Make Texas Healthy” bill. His insights might just help folks understand how the state budget is shaping up and the impact on local initiatives. It’s always good to get a glimpse into how our representatives are working for our communities!
While things are looking up in many areas, we also need to keep our eyes peeled for safety in our neighborhoods. Recently, there were some disturbing incidents in Bryan. On March 11, 2025, a disturbance at a mobile home park led to two injuries. A man named Dan Arzola was arrested after he assaulted a victim. The wild part? A juvenile intervened and ended up stabbing Arzola in defense of the victim!
Arzola didn’t make matters better by damaging the victim’s vehicle before he fled. He was later apprehended by the police, treated for his stab wound, and ultimately charged with multiple offenses.
Just a day earlier, on March 10, 2025, there was a shooting incident related to another individual, Zachariah Hawkins, who was arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm following a report of gunfire. Fortunately, no one was injured, although it certainly raised some eyebrows in the community.
As we continue following these stories, remember to stay vigilant and engaged with what’s happening around you in Brazos County. It’s a busy time filled with progress, community efforts, and some reminders about safety. Stay tuned for more updates, and as always—take care of each other!
