Volunteers Unite in Bryan for Bonfire Memorial Cleanup Ahead of Remembrance Ceremony

Volunteers Rally in Bryan for Bonfire Memorial Cleanup

Bryan is getting ready for a heartfelt tradition as volunteers come together to ensure the Bonfire Memorial shines bright for the upcoming bonfire remembrance ceremony. It’s that special time of year when the community unites to honor the memories of fallen Aggies, and your help is needed!

Why Volunteers are Key

According to the Director of the University Art Galleries, Cathy Hastedt, “We rely on volunteers because it is a very large memorial. It takes a lot of time to do it.” And she’s absolutely right! This memorial, dedicated to the Aggies who lost their lives during the tragic bonfire collapse in 1999, is a significant site that deserves the utmost care and respect.

Last year was particularly touching as members of the Texas Exes—the alumni association for the University of Texas—joined in. “It was really great because the father of one of the fallen Aggies was from the University of Texas,” Hastedt mentioned, showcasing how the spirit of camaraderie stretches beyond rivalries.

Mark Your Calendars

The big cleanup day is scheduled for Friday, November 8. However, in case Mother Nature decides to rain on the parade, the efforts will be postponed to Monday, November 11. This means you still have a chance to make an impact—whether it’s getting your hands dirty or just spreading the word!

How to Get Involved

Are you wondering how you can lend a hand? It’s easy! Simply follow the community’s call to action and find out how to volunteer for the bonfire cleanup. Your contribution will not only help maintain a sacred site but also strengthen community bonds.

A Little Something Extra: Free Quilting Workshop

If you’re looking for a creative outlet after all the memorial work, you’re in luck! On November 14, there’s a free quilting workshop happening that’s perfect for beginners. Hastedt is excited about this opportunity, noting, “You will be able to make a simple quilt square, and it’s going to be on the 14th of November at 2 p.m. It’s a one-hour workshop.”

The workshop will be led by none other than Donna from Donna’s Quilting Respite. She’s set to provide all the materials needed, so no need to worry about bringing anything! Just come in, roll up your sleeves, and dive into the world of quilting.

Don’t Miss Out

It’s important to sign up since spots may be limited for the quilting workshop. This is a wonderful opportunity to stretch your creative skills while connecting with members of the community in a fun and engaging way. So, whether you’re wielding a broom at the memorial or sewing fabric patches, Bryan is buzzing with ways to participate and have a blast!

Both events highlight the spirit of togetherness the city embodies, showcasing how people can unite for a good cause. Join in the cleanup to honor the memories of beloved Aggies, and don’t forget to check out the quilting workshop to explore a new hobby!

See You There!

Let’s come together as a community and show support for the Bonfire Memorial and each other. Mark these dates on your calendar and get ready for a meaningful experience filled with memories, creativity, and connection!
