A proud alumnus and former vice chairman, Mahomes aims to enhance teaching, research, and opportunities for students. This leadership change comes as the board prepares for future initiatives, including a search for a new chancellor. With Mahomes’ dedication and leadership, Texas A&M looks ahead to a brighter future in education and student engagement.
In a vibrant ceremony that celebrated the future of education in Texas, the Texas A&M University System has ushered in a new era of leadership with the election of William “Bill” Mahomes Jr. as the chairman of the Board of Regents. A proud alumnus of Texas A&M, Mahomes has been a dedicated member of the Board since his appointment by Governor Greg Abbott in 2015. After serving as vice chairman for the past two years, he is stepping into this prominent role with a vision to enhance all facets of teaching, research, and community service across the state.
Many may not know that Bill Mahomes, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business from Texas A&M in 1969, made history as the first Black student to graduate from the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets. After completing his undergraduate education, he furthered his studies by earning a law degree from the University of Texas in 1972. With a rich background serving as Executive Vice President and General Counsel at Vista Bank, Mahomes brings a wealth of experience to his new role.
As he takes on the chairmanship, Mahomes expresses great honor in leading a board dedicated to promoting educational advancement. He shared that his focus will be on paving the way for future generations and creating better opportunities for students, staff, and faculty alike.
The Board of Regents also made waves by electing Robert L. Albritton as the new vice chairman. This change in leadership is expected to invigorate the Board’s initiatives as they prepare for a nationwide search for a replacement for Chancellor John Sharp, who recently announced his retirement effective June 30, 2025.
Chancellor Sharp, who has served as the longest-tenured chancellor in Texas A&M’s history for the past 14 years, played a crucial role during his tenure, overseeing a remarkable growth in student enrollment. Under his leadership, the number of students at the College Station campus surged from nearly 50,000 to over 77,000! His influence has helped expand the Texas A&M System to 11 universities, providing education to more than 150,000 students statewide.
During his impressive tenure, Sharp achieved significant accomplishments, including the acquisition of the Texas Wesleyan University School of Law and notably enhancing the national stature of the football program. While there were milestones reached, Sharp’s time was not without its challenges. He faced political controversies regarding faculty hiring processes and policies surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion.
In recent legislative sessions, Sharp secured an astonishing $1 billion in funding for Texas A&M. Such financial prowess not only bolstered the university’s projects but also fortified the educational landscape for thousands of students across Texas.
As Mahomes steps into his position as chairman, there are high hopes for continuity in service, leadership, and integrity—the core principles that characterize Texas A&M University. With a budget of $7.2 billion, the Texas A&M University System boasts a vast educational outreach that significantly contributes to the state’s economy.
While honoring the legacies of his predecessors, Mahomes aims to push forward, determined to lay the groundwork for a brighter and more inclusive future. With excitement buzzing in the air, the Texas A&M family eagerly anticipates embracing this new chapter of growth and community service!
