Beef Cattle Short Course Explores Use of AI in Ranching

AgTech: Leveraging Technology for Enhanced Profitability

The recent Beef Cattle Short Course at Texas A&M University explored possibilities of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into the ranching industry. Titled “AgTech: Leveraging Technology for Enhanced Ranch Profitability”, the course shed light on maximizing efficiency and promoting sustainable practices through digital technology in the ranching business.

Ranchers worldwide face increasing financial constraints, spurred by last year’s climatic challenges of drought and excessive heat. The focus of the course was to demonstrate how these challenges can be mitigated by employing AI and other technological advancements effectively.

Data Analytics and Predictive Modelling for Optimal Livestock Management

One of the key tools showcased was Lore, an app developed by Dutch company, dsm-firmenich. This innovative application enables ranchers to analyze a wealth of data collected from their livestock and resources and derives predictions, aiding in making informed and optimal management choices.

Lore uses a well-established method known as precision farming with a specific focus on livestock. The program’s AI algorithms generate daily predictions by examining various factors such as an animal’s characteristics, routine indicators, and consumption, along with the time of year. Performance metrics are then compared against historical data to classify livestock performance as above or below average.

Emerging AI Solutions in Ranching

Precision Livestock Technologies (PLT), a firm based in Dallas, is another key player pushing the boundaries of data analytics in the ranching industry. PLT has developed a solar-powered camera system that collects round-the-clock data on livestock feeding habits, weights, and behaviors.

The AI employed by PLT uses this data to accurately identify changes in the animals’ routines and behaviors. This assists ranchers in adjusting their procedures in real-time for improved efficiency and optimizing profits. The data provided by PLT can also help identify barriers to optimal livestock management and track trends that may impact the overall output.

Reaping the Benefits of AI in the Ranching Industry

Integration of AI in the ranching industry offers numerous benefits. Not only does this technology help improve livestock management efficiency but also reduces the chance of human errors replacing the need for skilled labor on the ranch.

As these technologies are further refined and made more accessible, the ranching community will be better equipped to cope with environmental uncertainties and continue to maximize productivity efficiently.
