No. 11 Aggies Assert Dominance Over Razorbacks in a 4-1 Victory
The No. 11 Texas A&M women’s tennis team showcased solid play and impressive dominance as they defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks at the Billingsley Tennis Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas on Sunday, April 7. The vigorous contest saw the Aggies collecting a consequential 4-1 victory.
Strong Start from the Razorbacks in Doubles Play
The day began with the Razorbacks showing some resilience in doubles play. The senior-junior duo, Lenka Stara and Grade O’Donnell, came off strong, sealing the first set 6-4 against the Aggies’ pair of freshmen, Lucciana Perez and Jeanette Mireles. However, restoring balance for the Aggies, the No. 5 tandem of junior Mary Stoiana and sophmore Mia Kupres fired back with a 6-3 win in the second match. Despite this Aggie response, the Razorbacks managed to grab the day’s first point. Aggie’s Sydney Fitch and Daria Smetannikov suffered a 6-1 defeat at the hands of Arkansas’ Kelley Keller and Carolina Gomez Alonso.
Aggies Flip the Script in Singles Play
Shifting gears as singles play started on court 3, the Aggies embarked on a breakthrough. Freshman Lucciana Perez, put the first point on the board for the Maroon and White, breezing past the Razorbacks’ senior Indianna Spink in a swift two-set match, 6-1, 6-1. This victory lit the spark for the Aggies.
Adding to this momentum, Ellie Pittman handed A&M their first lead of the day by defeating Arkansas’ Kacey Harvey with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 triumph on court 6. Maroon and White then stretched their lead as Jeanette Mireles overpowered Lenka Stara on court 4, securing another win for the Aggies, 6-2, 6-3.
Fulfilling her top billing, No.1 Stoiana clinched the victory for the Aggies by dispatching the Razorbacks’ No. 26 Carolina Gomez at 6-2, 6-2. Meanwhile, A&M’s duo of Mia Kupres and Daria Smetannikov were leading their respective matches against Kelley Keller and Morgan Cross, before play was halted due to the Aggies securing the overall victory.
A Solid Victory and a Promising Future
The conquest over the Razorbacks marked the tenth conference win for the Aggies, pushing their overall score to an impressive 18-6. The victory is not only reflective of their current form but also bodes well for their future games.
The Maroon and White will be looking to improve their record as they welcome Auburn to the home turf at the Mitchell Tennis Center on Friday, April 12.
