Police Encounter with Suspicious Vehicle
In recent police news, a College Station police officer stopped a car recently that had dubious insurance details. It turns out that one of the passengers, 23-year-old Jukorey Luna-Johnson, had a pretty extensive rap sheet! Johnson is accused of violating probation with a history that dates back to 2018, boasting charges that include two DUIs, two robberies, and even two assaults related to family violence.
As if that wasn’t enough, he’s also facing new charges for giving false information, including a fake name and birth date when questioned by authorities. Currently, Johnson is being held without bond for his probation violations from robbery charges, while the bond for the other allegations totals a whopping $55,400. Stay safe out there, folks!
Groundbreaking Ceremony for New Medical Examiner’s Office
Now onto some more positive news! A long-awaited medical examiner’s office is officially under construction in Brazos County. A groundbreaking ceremony took place on December 17, where speakers included Brazos County judge Duane Peters, district attorney Jarvis Parsons, former College Station mayor Karl Mooney, and Dr. Amy Waer, the dean of Texas A&M’s College of Medicine. This $34 million dollar facility will cater to the entire Brazos Valley, serving a radius of 100 miles!
When can we expect the grand opening? Well, weather permitting, this one-story building is set to open its doors in April of 2026. How’s that for planning ahead?
Texas A&M on the Hunt for New Leadership
Changing gears, it seems Texas A&M University is gearing up for some leadership transitions as well! The university is in the process of searching for a new Vice President for Student Affairs following the retirement announcement of Joe Ramirez. This change will take effect on January 1, 2025, meaning they’re on a deadline!
The search committee will be chaired by Vice Provost Tim Scott, who is set to meet this week to kick off the selection process. In the meantime, Tom Reber, the associate vice president, will return as the interim VPSA. Reber is well-known around the university, having served over 40 years in various capacities. President Mark Welsh has expressed his gratitude for Reber’s leadership during this transition.
New Principal Takes the Reins at Jane Long Intermediate School
Lastly, in the education sector, some exciting changes are happening at Jane Long Intermediate School! During the recent Bryan ISD school board meeting held on December 16, the board approved Michael Gibson as the new principal. Gibson has been a member of the Bryan ISD family for 14 years and will be stepping up from his role as assistant principal at Davila Middle School.
The district is buzzing with excitement over Gibson’s passion for education and his proven ability to connect with both students and staff. With a bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M and a master’s in educational leadership, he’s already off to a strong start in his new leadership position. Superintendent Ginger Carrabine has voiced confidence in his capabilities, and we can’t wait to see where he’ll lead the school!
