Bryan: A Week of Wild Events and Unexpected Twists
Greetings from Bryan, where it seems like news never sleeps! This past week has brought a mix of crime, school closures, and a canceled community project that keeps us all talking. Grab a cup of coffee and let’s dive into the latest happenings!
Price Tag Switcheroo: A Costly Mistake
Let’s start with an unexpected twist from the College Station Target! A 53-year-old local man, Troy Tarver, found himself in some hot water last Saturday after he allegedly switched price tags on merchandise. According to the College Station police, surveillance footage captured Tarver paying a mere $93.07 for items that had a hefty price tag of $679.79. Talk about a steal – but not in the way he intended! This little price-switching act landed him in the slammer, charged with theft and fraud. After spending a short time behind bars, he posted a $7,000 bond and was released on December 1.
However, this wasn’t just a one-off incident for Tarver. He found himself back in jail on December 4 due to a theft charge from earlier in the month. It looks like he’s managing quite a portfolio of criminal activities with previous convictions from 2022 and three drug-related cases from this year hanging over his head. It’s a shame to see someone caught in such a cycle!
A Teen in Trouble Again
Next up, we have a young man from Bryan, Ethan Weeks, who just can’t seem to stay out of trouble. Already awaiting a trial for allegedly injuring an elderly person, Weeks has been charged again, this time for violating a protection order by making threats with a firearm. In a wild twist, he also removed an ankle monitor linked to a different case! As of December 6, Weeks remains behind bars, with bonds totaling a staggering $75,500. Yikes!
School Closure: Pebble Creek Elementary Faces Cleanup
Switching gears to a lighter topic, parents and students of Pebble Creek Elementary got some unexpected news last week. The school was forced to close after a broken water line led to significant flooding in the building. Initially, classes were set to resume on December 9, following a thorough cleanup process. However, after taking a closer look, school officials canceled classes for December 6 as well to ensure everyone’s safety. The recovery effort is in full swing, with air quality tests and floor cleaning taking top priority. Parents can expect an update this coming Sunday!
Bye-Bye Indoor Tennis Center
In a bit of disappointing news for sports lovers, the proposed indoor tennis center at Midtown Park in Bryan has been scrapped. Due to rising construction costs and logistical challenges, the Bryan City Council is set to formally terminate the agreement with Texas A&M and other contractors on December 10. Although the center was supposed to be a fantastic addition featuring six tennis courts, pickleball courts, and the potential to host NCAA tournaments, the dreams of having a vibrant sports complex will be postponed for now.
A Sneaky Heist at M.C. Harris Alternative School
Lastly, in some bizarre yet alarming news, three young men were arrested after being caught rummaging through a student’s truck parked outside M.C. Harris alternative school. They allegedly stole a wallet that contained a whopping $41,000! Caught red-handed, 17-year-olds Tag Radford and Adrian Zantos-Covarrubias, alongside 18-year-old Treylyn Nutall, now face charges of vehicle burglary and participating in organized criminal activity. Each is held with bonds of $8,000 as they await their fate.
As you can see, life in Bryan is anything but dull! With crime, school drama, and canceled projects, there’s plenty to keep an eye on in our community. Stay tuned for more updates, and as always, stay safe out there!
