College Station Welcomes Exciting Events from Sports to Academia

The vibrant city of College Station, Texas, was buzzing with energy this past week, thanks to a series of exciting events that brought the community together. From the thrilling basketball showdown at Reed Arena to an inspiring night focused on supporting first-generation college students, there was something for everyone in this lively college town.

The energy peaked on Friday night when the No. 23 Texas A&M men’s basketball team squared off against the No. 21 Ohio State Buckeyes. Fans filled the stands at Reed Arena, decked out in their Aggie colors, to cheer on their team in this nail-biting matchup.

This clash marked the second time the two teams faced off recently, and anticipation had been building for weeks. With both teams boasting impressive records, the stakes were high as players took to the floor. Dinner with a Dean aimed at celebrating and supporting first-generation college students. Held on March 18, 2023, this initiative aimed to bridge the gap for those stepping into the unknown world of higher education.

“We’re here to support you in every way possible,” Curtis stated. For students like Hannah League, a graduate student in public health sciences, the evening was a powerful experience. “It was great to hear Dr. Gibbs talk about his own experience as a first-gen student. It reminded me that my journey is important, and there are people here who want to see me succeed,” League shared.

Building Community

24% of Aggies in the School of Public Health are first-generation students. He emphasized that the university recognizes the challenges these students face and is dedicated to creating a sense of belonging where every student feels valued. “This university is committed to your success, and you have countless resources and people cheering you on,” he declared with inspiring conviction.
