Community Unites at 19th Annual Brazos Valley Empty Bowls Event in Bryan, Texas

Gathering Together for a Cause in Bryan, Texas

In the heart of Bryan, Texas, the community came together for a beautiful cause at the 19th Annual Brazos Valley Empty Bowls event, held on a sunny Sunday at Blackwater Draw Brewing Co.. It was a day brimming with creativity, compassion, and a sense of togetherness as local artists, residents, and businesses joined forces to combat food insecurity—a pressing issue affecting many in the area.

Every Bowl Tells a Story

For just a minimal donation of $20, attendees were treated to a delightful selection of bowls, each lovingly handcrafted by local artists. With hundreds on display, the variety was impressive! From vibrant colors to intricate designs, every bowl represented not just craftsmanship but the hope of filling an empty plate.

Alongside their new bowls, guests enjoyed a hearty meal of soup and bread. These delicious offerings were generously donated by local restaurants, further showcasing the community’s dedication to supporting one another. It’s not just about the food; it’s about bridging the gap between those who have plenty and those who struggle.

A Growing Need

According to Amanda Bartel from White Lotus Pottery, the need for assistance in the community has surged dramatically over the past couple of years, with more than a staggering 72% increase in food insecurity. She expressed heartfelt gratitude saying, “So this just helps us to provide resources for those folks in the form of food and nutrients and also resources to help the food bank do what they do and help our neighbors.”

All Hands on Deck

This inspiring event was entirely volunteer-driven, showcasing the spirit of Bryan. Local artists stepped up to donate their time and creations, with contributions from various pottery studios like U Paint-It Pottery, Joy Pottery, Living Water Pottery, and Salamander Hands Pottery. Earlier in the year, community members had the chance to paint their bowls, either at U Paint-It or through a Pottery To-Go option, making the event a true community affair.

Making a Difference

Every dollar spent goes directly to support the Brazos Valley Food Bank. Bartel couldn’t help but share her excitement about the event’s success, adding, “We have sold over $5,000 worth of bowls already. We started with about 250 bowls and we have just a few left.” The enthusiasm was palpable, and attendees left not only with beautiful bowls but also a sense of pride having contributed to such an important cause.

The Heart of the Community

The emptiness of a bowl symbolizes not just hunger but also the potential to fill it. The Brazos Valley Empty Bowls event serves as a reminder that together, we can make a significant impact. Holding a new bowl on their desks, participants felt a sense of purpose and connection—witnessing firsthand how the community can come together in challenging times.

So, here’s to Bryan, Texas—the place where creativity meets compassion, and every bowl tells a story of hope and support for those in need. Let’s keep filling those bowls and helping our neighbors thrive!
