Dry Times Ahead for Bryan, Texas
Hello, friends in Bryan! As we jump into the fall season, it seems that the weather hasn’t quite caught up with the autumn vibes we hope for. In fact, we’re greeted with the surprising yet concerning news that our rain gauges for October currently show a stark 0.00″ of rainfall. That’s right—crickets, not raindrops!
What’s Been Happening?
First off, let’s rewind a bit. August and September, typically months that get their fair share of showers, only delivered a measly 1.43″ of rain at the Easterwood Airport. To say that we’ve fallen short of the average is an understatement! We expect more rain during these months, but it seems the skies had other plans, choosing to keep the droplets tucked away.
Now, because of this significant lack of rainfall, much of the Brazos Valley is facing the onset of a Stage 1 Moderate Drought. This condition covers a good chunk of our 16 counties. Just to be clear, there is one area on the eastern edge that is technically not in a drought, but they are still seeing some abnormally dry conditions emerging. And with the way things are going, it seems likely that this region could also find itself facing drought in the near future—possibly within a week or two!
How’s Texas Faring?
Taking a bigger look at Texas, it’s not just Bryan that’s feeling the heat. The whole state is experiencing some severe dry spells. Aside from a couple of regions—like the Big Country area and another stretch south of Corpus Christi—pretty much all of Texas is grappling with drought in some form. This decline in rainfall has noticeably affected our vegetation health and water levels across the board.
Extended Forecast Woes
What does the future hold? Unfortunately, the extended forecast isn’t looking too promising for rain anytime soon. It seems as though the Brazos Valley, along with various parts of Texas, will likely see a worsening drought situation. Without any significant rainfall, the drought monitor will keep showing those more vibrant colors indicating that we’re in trouble, and fire danger levels are expected to remain elevated.
Burn Bans: A Cautionary Note
To make matters even more serious, as of October 17th, outdoor burning is banned across all 16 counties in the Brazos Valley. This means that anything that could potentially create a spark is a no-go. Not only does this help protect our beautiful state from fires, but violating this ban could also result in fines. So please, let’s all be responsible and take this seriously. If you’re planning an outdoor activity, stick to safe alternatives!

As residents of Bryan and surrounding areas, we must be mindful of our water usage and take preventive steps against fire hazards. This drought has crept up on us, and together, we can hopefully weather this dry spell until the rains grace us once more.
