The Latest Buzz in Bryan: Exciting Developments and Heartfelt Stories

Bryan, TX is buzzing with activities, and we have some interesting updates you won’t want to miss! From big changes at the Midtown Park entertainment complex to a touching story about a brave little dog named Bryant, the stories just keep coming!

Midtown Park Gains a New Timeline!

For the second time now, the Bryan City Council has decided to extend the timeframe for the construction of the much-anticipated Midtown Park entertainment complex. The complex is set to feature a movie theater, bowling alley, and a delicious restaurant, offering something for everyone in the community! During their regular meeting in October, the council approved a second amendment to the economic development agreement, allowing the developers more time to bring their vision to life.

The delay, as explained by Mayor Bobby Gutierrez, primarily stems from the lengthy process of getting within budget for a dazzling $3 million dollar boardwalk at the park’s lake. This boardwalk is crucial, as several elements of the movie/bowling/restaurant building cannot be completed until it is finished. The first amendment to the agreement had already incorporated additions like indoor and outdoor pickleball courts, an amphitheater, and an outdoor games area that connects to this boardwalk.

This impressive addition is expected to increase the minimum appraised value of the property from $19 million to $24 million! Now the completion date has been pushed back from December 31, 2024, to September 1, 2025. Furthermore, the developer is committed to investing at least $37 million into building this complex, which promises to be an incredible hub of entertainment for the residents.

A Story of Resilience: Bryant the Dog’s Journey

On a different note, we have a heartfelt story to share about Bryant, an eight-year-old Shih Tzu. This brave little pup is currently recovering from multiple jaw fractures and several fractured teeth. The saga began on July 12, when College Station Police arrested a man, Aaron Henry, for a heartbreaking case of animal cruelty. According to the police report, Henry admitted to throwing Bryant to the ground, demonstrating what he did in a disturbing manner.

Henry explained that his actions resulted from “multiple stressors” and not because Bryant had provoked him. At the time of the incident, Bryant’s owner, who had been staying with Henry after being displaced by Hurricane Beryl, was not present. The following day, Bryant was taken to the Texas A&M small animal hospital, where veterinary experts worked tirelessly on his injuries, eventually putting his mouth on wires and performing a second surgery in September.

The heartwarming news is that while the medical bills and associated costs have totaled nearly $9,000, Bryant is on the road to recovery and is surrounded by love and support from his owner. Henry, meanwhile, has been released from jail after posting a $10,000 bond.

Enormous Growth at Texas A&M

In more news, there’s an exciting update regarding a major project at Texas A&M, which is now the second most expensive capital project on campus. The Aplin Center, initially projected to cost $50 million, has skyrocketed to an estimated $250 million. The center aims to host programs focusing on hospitality, retail studies, and food product development, which includes everything from viticulture to coffee science.

Vice Chancellor Phillip Ray recently shared that a public-private partnership formed with a $50 million donation from Arch Aplin III has played a role in this growth. After transitioning to a direct project management model through the A&M system, an architect has already been hired, and construction managers are being sought. The Aplin Center is anticipated to contribute significantly to educational experiences for students in those fields.

Tragic Traffic Incident

Lastly, we want to share our condolences regarding a recent tragic event. A motorcycle accident on FM 60 east of the Brazos River took the life of 69-year-old James Jolly of Somerville. The preliminary investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety suggests that James struck a vehicle while attempting a U-turn, resulting in a devastating outcome. Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time.

As Bryan continues to grow and evolve, these stories remind us of the strength of our community, the compassion we share, and the excitement that lies ahead. Stay tuned for more updates!
