“It’s gone. The water came and took everything away,” Stephanie Hamilton lamented, recounting the losses inflicted by the hurricane. The Hamilton family, which includes their two young children, endured a harrowing eight days stranded on a mountainside after the storm wreaked havoc on their new home.
With their house completely destroyed, the family found themselves separated from rescue efforts, trapped on the wrong side of a flooded creek. “There are people trapped on, you know, 100 feet of missing road,” clarified Hamilton. Although the path to safety was perilous, their rescue finally came last Thursday. The emotional toll of the experience hit hard when Stephanie returned to the area that once was their creek, reducing her to tears. “I just started bawling,” she said.

When the Hamiltons made their way back to what was left of their neighborhood, they faced a heart-wrenching sight. Landslides adorned with massive trees snapped in half overwhelmed the view, while about ten feet of water flooded through the local area. The true magnitude of the destruction was hard to absorb.

Despite their situation, the Hamiltons emphasized the outpouring of support that has emerged from their community. “There’s been no shortage of help,” Stephanie remarked, highlighting how local donations and volunteers have stepped up. However, she cautioned that misinformation has plagued recovery efforts, particularly regarding Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) aid.
“One of the major things that can be done is that misinformation can stop being spread,” urged Hamilton. She clarified some of the myths circulating about FEMA, especially rumors suggesting the agency is offering minimal support or will seize homes if aid isn’t repaid. “That is simply not true,” she noted. Her concerns echo the situation many faced after the storm, as confusion about assistance programs can complicate recovery.
A Call for Accurate Information
A representative from FEMA reported that the agency has committed $70 million to assist those affected by Hurricane Helene, with tens of thousands of dollars already distributed to applicants in need. But the Hamiltons’ fears regarding misinformation highlight a larger issue in disaster recovery efforts.
Brian Hamilton shared his observations from the disaster, highlighting the visible efforts of relief organizations. “Before we left, there were Army and Red Cross helicopters flying people back and forth,” he noted, showcasing the critical support that was available all around them.

To date, FEMA has provided more than 40,000 bottles of water and over 10,000 meals to those grappling with the impact of the storm. The agency has also assisted more than 1,250 households with transitional sheltering, emphasizing their commitment to helping families rebuild.
