Walker County Shines with Leadership Accomplishments
On a sunny yet hot day, with temperatures peaking around 95°F, Walker County basked in the glow of a significant achievement on August 15. It was a day to celebrate as Brandon Decker, associated with Precinct 4, proudly walked across the stage to receive his diploma from the Commissioners Court Leadership Academy, hosted by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service.
Graduation Day Extravaganza
Fifteen county judges and commissioners gathered in College Station to mark the successful conclusion of a two-day session filled with learning and networking. Dr. Peter McGuill, the director of the V.G. Young Institute of County Government, recognized the hard work of all graduates, emphasizing their commitment to enhancing their leadership skills. He noted that this academy is not just an educational endeavor; it forms a community of leaders across Texas.
Walker County Commissioner Brandon Decker shared his enthusiasm about the experience, stating, “The CCLA has introduced me to leaders across the state, and we have formed friendships that will last a lifetime.” He highlighted the importance of the program, saying that “other counties are struggling with the same problems Walker County has. It is invaluable to have that network of friends across the state.”

The Commissioners Court Leadership Academy spans two years and includes four multi-day sessions located in various cities around Texas and even in Washington, D.C.. During this immersive training, participants engage with leadership development specialists while visiting key sites like the Brayton Fire Training Field and the Texas A&M Forest Service’s State Emergency Operations Center.
