Brazos Valley Regional Advisory Council Spotlights Fall Prevention Initiative

Community members in Bryan, Texas are being invited to an event focused on the major health risk that falling poses to older adults. The Brazos Valley Regional Advisory Council (BVRAC) is launching this initiative as part of a broader campaign aimed at preventing falls among the growing elderly population in the region.

Falls Amount to a Significant Risk

Falling is dangerous and potentially life-altering for elderly individuals, who may lose their ability to maintain an independent lifestyle following a fall injury. Elderly individuals – those 65 and older – stand a one in four chance of experiencing a fall this year alone, a statistic that underscores the importance of the BVRAC’s upcoming campaign.

Aiming for Awareness

The overarching goal of the new campaign is to foster awareness about this issue as the community ages, and potentially starts experiencing a decline in muscle abilities and balance. According to Lori Porter, Acute Care Community Chair at BVRAC, the council is all about awareness. “We want to make sure you’re aware of your environmental risk factors,” says Porter. “Our objective is to do everything within our capacity to prevent this segment of the population from falling.”

Upcoming Health Fair to Raise Awareness

A health fair will be held at the Brazos Valley Council of Governments as part of this initiative, commencing at 10 a.m. on September 13. The health fair promises to be an informative event, designed to educate the public on measures they can take to prevent fall-related injuries in the elderly community.

Impact on the Region

The increase in general awareness and prevention of falls could make a significant impact in the region. A decline in injuries can reduce hospital admissions and healthcare costs, while improving the quality of life for the elderly community. As emphasized by the BVRAC, prevention through awareness and education is key and this health fair is a great step towards achieving that.

The entire community is encouraged to attend the health fair and take active steps towards a safer environment for its older population. With fall-related injuries posing a significant threat to the independence and well-being of elderly individuals, understanding the risks and learning prevention strategies have never been so important.

Call for support

This initiative is one in a series of efforts by the BVRAC to ensure the safety and well-being of all its population. The council encourages everyone, crucially including family members and carers of elderly individuals, to attend the event in support of creating an environment in Bryan, Texas where older residents can thrive injury-free.
