‘Consent is changeable’: the importance of discussing and respecting boundaries

BRYAN, Texas– The recent arrest related to a sexual assault case in College Station has sparked significant conversations about the necessity for open communication, understanding, and respect for boundaries in romantic interactions. Broaching this subject is the Sexual Assault Resource Center, a non-profit organization in Brazos Valley dedicated to providing support and resources to survivors of sexual violence.

Teaching Consent from a Young Age

Lindsey LeBlanc, executive director of the Sexual Assault Resource Center (SARC), emphasised on the importance of introducing the concept of consent early on in life. “Consent is such an important starting point for anyone of any age really,” explained LeBlanc. “We even talk about it at the elementary school level with discussions around body autonomy, appropriate ways to show affection like hugs and the significance of personal space and touch.”

As children mature into adolescence, LeBlanc suggests parents to initiate more detailed conversations about consent and its implications. In her view, parents must pave the way in ensuring that their children are informed and empowered enough to make decisions about their own bodies.

Consent is Changeable

LeBlanc’s principal message from these discussions is that consent is a mutable decision. She said, “You can change your mind. You can be in the midst of a date or a conversation initially agreeing to something, then decide that’s not what you want anymore halfway through. Although this can be easier said than done, it’s crucial to remember that your comfort and agency matter.”

LeBlanc also emphasizes the importance of ensuring someone, be it a close friend or a family member, is aware of your whereabouts to aid your safety in potentially precarious situations.

Support Services offered by SARC

SARC provides a multitude of services, such as a 24/7 hotline, hospital accompaniment round the clock, and free counselling for survivors of sexual assault.

SARC is hosting a fundraising event next month to support the continuity of these programs. The event, labeled as “An Evening Under the Stars”, is slated for Friday, September 20 at the Texas A&M Hotel and Conference Center.

Conclusion

The significance of discussing and respecting boundaries cannot be understated. In light of the recent sexual assault case, it is more crucial than ever to bring conversations about consent to the forefront, teach kids about consent from a young age, and understand the dynamics of consent being subject to change at any point during an interaction. Through such discourse and understanding, we can foster a society that promotes personal safety and respect for individual boundaries.
