A recent census report has placed College Station, Texas, among the top five fastest growing retirement populations in America. The US Census Bureau report coupled with an article by Realtor.com reveals that Texas houses four cities in the top 10 spots where retirees are choosing to relocate, with College Station being a principal contender.
Affordability and Amenities Drive Growth
A combination of affordable housing, lower tax rates, local healthcare facilities, retail options, and entertainment pursuits have made College Station an attractive retirement location. 88-year-old Zanna Bickham, who migrated to the city from West Texas, shared that the friendliness of the place, its amenities, and ease of access to essential services influenced her choice. “It’s a very friendly place,” Bickham said. “You don’t have to go very far to get the things you want.”
Excellent Healthcare Facilities
Healthcare is a significant factor retirees consider when choosing where to live in their golden years. Bickham praised the medical facilities in College Station, stating, “The medical facilities in College Station are great. I don’t have to go to other places most of the time,” a critical fact considering her past experience of driving 165 miles for medical aid.
Rapid Population Growth Observed by Local Retirement Community
The Langford Retirement Community has recorded a surge in the number of applicants over the last few years. “We have been at 100% for the last year plus,” shared Lisa Miller, the facility’s sales counselor. “We’ve been open for six years. I would say, as we were ramping up and moving folks in, we became full quite quickly.”
An Ideal Environment for Retirement
Miller was not surprised that College Station made the top 10 list. She attributed this to the convenient location of the city, indicating, “Individuals don’t have to suffer a lot of bad traffic, they don’t have to go too far to get to any retail store, theater, marketplace of any kind. The people are genuinely happy in this type of environment. It’s very pleasant.”
City Accommodating Growing Retirement Community
Given the rising retirement population, several senior living communities, including Woodland Cottages and Lakeside at Millican Reserve, are under development, ensuring that the city is well-equipped to cater to the growing needs of its aging population. The rise in retirement communities speaks volumes about the city’s efforts to accommodate and care for its increasing retiree population.
