Widespread Damage and Flooding makes a Nightmare out of the Overnight Storms
Bryan, Texas – A Wave of Destruction
Following an overnight storm that lasted from Saturday into the early hours of Sunday, the residents of the Brazos Valley witnessed flash floods, washed-out roads, power outages and some hail storms. The area also experienced wind damage, with rural areas of east central Brazos and northwestern Grimes being affected by flooding.
Areas under Flood Warnings
A Flood Warning was issued until midnight along Hwy 30, with the water from the Navasota River teetering a few inches below the bottom of the bridge at Hwy 30. Residents have been cautioned to avoid the flooded areas, adhering to the cardinal rule in these situations – turn around, don’t drown.
Residential Flooding: A Glimpse from Above
A drone footage captured by resident Christopher Gilmore revealed the extent of flooding, specifically along Rock Prairie Road between Lick Creek Park and Peach Creek Road in College Station. The footage showed at least one home engulfed by overflowing water from Carter’s Creek. However, it remains unclear if the home was still inhabited at the time of the incident.
Power Outages and Fallen Trees
Several areas reported downed trees hitting power lines, causing power outages. Here, Bryan Texas Utilities (BTU) stepped in, releasing a statement assuring residents that their crews would continue working until power was fully restored. Patience was sought from the residents amid the restoration process.
Property Damage from Storms
In Bryan-College Station, some homes and vehicles have sustained damage after large trees were either uprooted or snapped by the heavy winds. Additionally, washed-out roads have been reported, notably in the Calvert area, where firefighters had to come to the aid of a driver who had driven into a washed-out roadway on S Tidewell Prairie. The driver, fortunately, did not sustain any serious injuries from the incident.
Road Hazards and Advisories
Authorities are urging drivers to stay vigilant against hazardous road conditions, especially when driving in rural areas at night. Drivers are encouraged to postpone non-essential trips, if possible, and to be cautious when approaching areas prone to flooding.
