Stepping into a New Role

Colby Schniederjan, the head coach of the College Station girls basketball team, has officially announced his acceptance of the head coaching job for boys basketball at Childress High School. This decision comes amidst the second consecutive off-season search for a new head coach by the College Station girls basketball team.

Schniederjan broke the news on Wednesday afternoon following an announcement by the College Station school district about the job opening. “Childress is a 3A school located at the southern end of the Panhandle. The location places me and my family closer to our respective origins, making this move a great personal one for us,” said Schniederjan.

A Return Home

Back in May 2023, Schniederjan was chosen as a replacement for DeAnna Doles, the former girls basketball head coach at College Station who moved to a similar position at Pleasant Grove. This appointment was a homecoming for Schniederjan, a one-time assistant coach for boys basketball at College Station.

As Schniederjan explained, “I was given a fantastic opportunity to return to a community where I am surrounded by mentors and colleagues that I hold in high regard. I intended to remain in this position for the foreseeable future. This decision to leave comes strictly from a personal perspective.”

Setting New Goals

Despite a less than stellar past season, where College Station finished with a 10-25 and 2-12 record in District 21-5A, Schniederjan was eager to continue working with the team. With a transition to District 17-5A set for the next season, Schniederjan was ready to steer the team towards better performance.

However, when approached by the Childress athletic director for his consideration for the boys basketball coaching position at Childress High School, Schniederjan decided to throw his hat into the ring. As he commented, “My wife and I felt that this could be an opportunity worth exploring. Thankfully, Childress provided us with a fantastic arrangement.”

Looking Ahead

Schniederjan officially accepted the offer on Monday, with the board sanctioning it the same night. Although he has already tendered his resignation to College Station, Schniederjan plans to round off the academic year before making his transition to Childress officially. His goal is to prepare for summer development with his new team by June 1. Last season, Childress achieved a strong position with a 27-9 and 9-3 record in District 2-3A, finishing second and making it to the playoffs’ fourth round.

“I want to leave things in good order here in College Station before moving on,” said Schniederjan. “It’s important to me that this transition goes as smoothly as possible.”

To fill Schniederjan’s now-vacant position, applicants are advised to send resumes to College Station campus athletics coordinator and head football coach Stoney Pryor at spryor@csisd.org.
