College Station ISD Adds Additional Band Director Positions to Boost Music Education and Student Safety
The College Station Independent School District (ISD) has approved the addition of one extra Band Director at both College Station and A&M Consolidated High Schools. By creating additional positions, the board aims to assure student safety, augment the quality of music education, and balance the escalating administrative duties for the existing staff.
Addressing Increased Enrollment and Workload
With an expected combined enrollment of 400 students in band programs across both schools for the 2024-2025 school year, the move represents a significant step towards optimizing teaching scenarios.
As the workload of current Band Directors increases, the district recognizes the necessity for increased staffing to manage the administrative responsibilities, instructional structures, and overall operations of the programs more effectively.
Jon Seale, Band Director at College Station High School since 2019, has expressed his relief on the announcement. “Being able to have another person with another set of eyes and ears on things will just make things more manageable, and we can give better instruction — better feedback,” said Seale.
Aiming for a Safer and More Balanced Learning Environment
College Board has committed to prioritizing not only students’ learning experiences but also their safety. The decision echoes other 5-A schools that have three or four directors, ensuring a safer, more balanced teaching environment.
Sara Goolsby, Chief of Staff, emphasized the dual objectives of the move during the school board meeting. She said, “With a projection of a combined 400 students next year in the program at our schools, we not only consider the program’s excellence but student safety.”
Enhancing the Band Program and Reducing Director Stress Levels
The addition of a third director is expected to alleviate stress on the two current Band Directors and contribute to enhancing the school band programs. Brayden Senkel, a Senior Drum Major, has commended the Board’s decision, recognizing the hard work rendered by the current directors. “I think adding a third director will alleviate some of that stress,” reiterated Senkel.
The announcement has been received positively, with Seale expressing his excitement. “We were so excited the district said ‘Hey, look how successful your program has been, we want to do what we can to support these students,” added Seale.
