High-speed Pursuit on Texas Avenue Ends in Arrest
In a heart-throttling episode on Sunday evening, a College Station man instigated a high-speed car chase as he attempted to evade law enforcement around the Texas Avenue area. As of Monday afternoon, the individual, identified as 27-year-old Kevin Rugumbira, remained in custody.
An Attempt to Flee Law Enforcement
Rugumbira initially attracted police attention because of a traffic violation. Law enforcement revealed that upon attempting to halt his vehicle near Texas Avenue and Lincoln Avenue, he refused to cooperate. Instead, Rugumbira continued driving southbound on Texas Avenue, initiating the hair-raising car chase.
Driving into Oncoming Traffic
The chase quickly escalated in severity when Rugumbira allegedly veered into oncoming traffic. The authorities stated that this maneuver almost resulted in multiple head-on collisions. As a top priority is to ensure the safety of residents, law enforcement decided to call off the pursuit, acknowledging that the suspect’s reckless driving posed an unmanageable risk.
Subsequent Arrest
However, the drama did not end there. Police later located Rugumbira’s vehicle—crashed in the 400 block of Dominik drive, near George Bush Drive. Traces of the suspect himself were initially elusive, as he had abandoned the wreckage and fled the scene. Law enforcement was able to locate him hiding underneath a pickup truck in the nearby 600 block of University Oaks Boulevard. Ironically, his capture resulted in another chase when officers discovered him under the pickup truck. Rugumbira once again attempted to outrun authorities, but was eventually apprehended in the 500 block of Harvey Road, as he navigated a breezeway at an apartment building.
Multiple Criminal Charges
Rugumbira now faces heavy charges, including evading arrest with a vehicle and evading arrest with a previous conviction. These charges are severe, reflecting the significant penalties for endangering citizens’ lives through reckless driving and refusal to cooperate with law enforcement.
