Over 2,000 served during Texas A&M’s Big Event

Big Event in Texas Records Over 2,000 Participants

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – A remarkable chapter was etched in the annals of community service records this past Saturday during the annual Big Event: over 2,000 residents were served by a mammoth volunteer force of more than 16,000 Texas A&M students. Hundreds of participants donated their time and enthusiasm, transforming the day into a massive exercise of altruism and community bonding.

The Big Event

The Big Event, run by Texas A&M students, kicks off with a morning ceremony before volunteers disperse to their respective service project locations. Now in its 42nd year, the event is recognized as the nation’s largest single-day, student-lead community service project. Volunteers enthusiastically engage in sundry service projects, including yard work, window washing, and painting for local residents.

A Day of Gratitude and Unity

Lauren Hamilton, a development committee member for the Big Event, expressed her awe at the massive turnout and collaborative spirit of the volunteers. “It’s an incredible day for the community to kind of be unionized and for the student body to give back to the residents of the area,” Hamilton articulated.

Hamilton also explained the event’s intricate planning cycle, which begins in June and continues until the very day of the event. The Big Event draws together a core team of over 300 impassioned students, dedicated to delivering a high-impact, rewarding experience for both the volunteers and the community residents.

Heartfelt Contributions Enrich Experience for First-timers

For freshman volunteer Kate Johnson, the day was filled with excitement and appreciation. “It’s crazy,” Johnson said. “I’m really excited about it, I’m just very happy to be here. It’s a great event and it’s incredible how much they did with it.”

Johnson’s group, FLO MSC Fish, assisted an A&M graduate and his wife in tearing down a fence and setting up new one. Reflecting on her experience, Johnson appreciated the event’s inclusive environment, asserting that it fostered connections on a deeper level. “It’s like it really allows you to connect on a deeper level and kind of make this place, not just a school you go to, but more of a home,” she concluded.

Transformational Power of Collective Giving

At the end of a day filled with activity and giving, Hamilton spoke positively of the Big Event, emphasizing the transformational power of collective giving. “Knowing that everybody has played their role in the Big Event and at the end of the day there are people being served that don’t normally get served or get the help they need and is just incredible,” concluded Hamilton.

As the sun set on the Big Event, the community of Bryan and College Station tingled with the warmth of giving and gratitude. Beyond the immediate impact of the various service projects, participants agreed on the more profound effect of the event: strengthening the bonds of the community and nurturing a culture of selfless service.
