City of Bryan Strategically Plots Flood Plans Ahead of Incidents
In an aim to pre-emptively tackle flooding incidents, the City of Bryan has begun the implementation of a series of flood mitigation measures, utilizing funds from a Flood Infrastructure Grant sanctioned in 2019.
Flood Infrastructure Grant Funds Project
The city successfully secured funding of $180,000 via the Flood Infrastructure Grant, towards a landmark $450,000 project, the “Flood Early Warning System”. A crucial instrument in preemptive measures against flooding, the system incorporates sensors that are configured to alert high floodwaters across 20 different regions of the city. Initiated in the year 2021, the construction of the system was completed over the span of two years, in 2023.
Warning System Assists Flood-Prone Neighborhoods
One neighborhood resident of Bryan, Gilbert Cobos, voiced his deep appreciation for the implementation of the system in a region he has been calling home since 2011. “In the past, it’s rained up to five inches in one day, where the creek across the street here has flowed over and come across the street, flooding a few houses down the road,” he recounted.
In response to this dire situation, the City responded promptly. “Turn around don’t drown” signs were erected citywide as part of the ‘Flood Early Warning System’ agenda in Fall 2021. This strategic move has earned praise from locals, who view it as a step in the right direction towards preemptive flood disaster mitigation.

She acknowledged that while water levels can sometimes be alarming, the signage serves as a helpful heads up for potential risk.
