Bravery Remembered: A Somber Tribute in College Station
On the crisp morning of September 11, 2024, College Station, TX, became a reflective space as community members gathered to honor the memories of those lost during the devastating events of 9/11. It’s hard not to feel a wave of emotion wash over you when you think about that fateful day. In a moving tribute, local firefighters and other first responders participated in a symbolic stair climb to pay homage to their fallen brothers and sisters.
Scaling New Heights of Courage
As the sun began to rise, participants readied themselves to tackle a grueling climb that mirrored the incredible bravery displayed by firefighters on that tragic day. Climbing 110 stories, they wore weighted gear that ranged between 50 to 80 pounds, simulating the strenuous conditions faced by first responders as they rushed to rescue victims trapped within the towers.
“I can’t stress this enough, feeling how we feel right now, just going up and down and imagining all the extra air tanks, hoses, the tools, and stuff they had to carry up with them,” said Chris Lamb, a Bryan firefighter who was profoundly impacted by the events of September 11, 2001. “It’s a small way for us to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.”
Memories That Shape Us
Chris, now a firefighter, reminisced about watching the horrific scenes unfold when he was only 21 years old and working on an ambulance. “I just remember my coworkers calling me and telling me to turn the TV on. I just watched as everything unfolded,” he recalled, a heavy sense of nostalgia in his voice.
With each step up the stairs, the climbers forged a connection to that fateful day—one that served as a pivotal moment for countless individuals. Chris shared how his desire to serve as a firefighter was ignited by this tragedy, saying, “Every year we do this, the same time when the towers fell, to help us remember the fallen, the service, and the sacrifice of those firefighters, police officers, and paramedics that day.”
An Emotional Climb
As the climbers reached the top, a solemn bell awaited them, a symbol of completion and remembrance. Each climber rang the bell after ascending and descending the stairs 14 times, signifying the 110 floors that were climbed by firefighters at the World Trade Center that day. This act served to commemorate those who didn’t make it back home to their families, transforming a simple bell into a powerful echo of gratitude and grief.

Trent Patterson, another firefighter and EMT, participated with a deep sense of respect for those who came before him. Although he wasn’t even born when the towers fell, he expressed that the events of 9/11 continue to resonate meaningfully in his life. “Even though I wasn’t born yet, it does still mean a lot to me,” he said, reflecting on the enduring impact of that day on future generations of first responders.
