50 Men Who Can Cook Event Celebrates 17 Years of Community Flavor and Support for Local Education

The lively town of College Station came alive this past Friday as the beloved 50 Men Who Can Cook event marked its 17th year at the spacious Brazos County Expo. What started as a small gathering has turned into a must-attend culinary extravaganza, attracting both food lovers and community supporters by the droves.

A Flavorful Feast

This year saw around 60 amateur cooking teams take part in the festivities. Each of these teams was made up of passionate local community and school leaders ready to show off their culinary skills. The buzz in the air was palpable as attendees sampled approximately 800, 2-ounce servings of creative dishes. From hearty salads and soothing soups to mouth-watering entrees and divine desserts, there was no shortage of flavor at this year’s event.

Among the cooking teams was Keith Slaughter from Greens Prairie Elementary School. Keith deserves a special shout-out because he has participated in every single iteration of this fantastic event. His contribution this year? Deliciously soft and warm snickerdoodle cookies that had everyone coming back for seconds!

More Than Just Great Food

The fun didn’t stop at the food! Attendees were treated to a variety of additional activities, including an exciting lucky doubles dice game and a chance to win amazing raffle prizes. Each of these activities added to the vibrant atmosphere and made the event feel like a true community celebration.

Supporting Local Education

The proceeds from this exciting gathering are significant because they support the College ISD Education Foundation, a nonprofit organization that has been around since 1999. The foundation dedicates itself to funding essential programs within the College Station Independent School District (CSISD). Last year alone, they awarded over $300,000 in grants aimed at innovative classroom projects, making a real difference in the educational landscape.

Growth Over the Years

It’s truly remarkable to see the growth of this beloved event. Starting with just 300 attendees and 50 booths in its inaugural year, the event has expanded tremendously, drawing in around 1,500 attendees this time around. It’s evident that the community has embraced this culinary celebration!

Culinary Showdowns

This year, each of the 19 campuses within the district had representatives cooking on behalf of their respective schools. Among the standout dishes was a creative concoction called “What’s The Big Dill Pickle Dip”, crafted by talented chefs Don Weir and Kevin Bradford. Other culinary delights included the delightful “Turtle Candy”, made by chefs Josh Symank, Austin Dunson, and Tim Harkrider, along with a winning entry called “Jackpot Dip” prepared by chefs Justin Mangham, Chad Jones, and Zac Polk.

Bring on the Votes!

To add an interactive twist to the dining experience, each guest was given coins to vote for their favorite dish. This created an engaging atmosphere as everyone’s culinary creations were put to the test. Admission to this food-tastic event was set at $100, which not only provided guests with ample food and drink but also access to games and auctions benefiting the education foundation.

Community Spirit Shines Bright

The love and support that the community has shown for this event over the years is commendable. It’s heartwarming to see so many folks come together to bolster public education while enjoying a lively evening filled with delicious food and camaraderie. As attendees left, they carried with them an understanding of the foundation’s vital mission to support teachers and students alike. Here’s to another fabulous year of great food and community spirit!
